Camp fYrefly is Canada’s only national leadership retreat for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit, asexual, intersex, queer, questioning, and allied youth. The camp provides a space for youth to explore their identity, build resilience and enhance self-esteem, all while having an awesome camp experience. Participants return home with a support network of positive friendships, trusted adult mentors, and an empowered sense of self.

“My favorite part of camp was all the people, the safety, the community, the friendship. Being able to be me!!”

-Camp fYrefly Participant

Camp fYrefly Southern Alberta began in 2013 thanks to a partnership between the University of Alberta’s Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services (ISMSS) and Calgary Sexual Health Centre.

The fifth annual Southern Alberta Camp fYrefly will be held July 6-9, 2017! Applications for the 2017 camp will open March 6 and close May 3. Learn more at:

Youth ages 14 to 24 can attend the camp for only $25. 2017 Camp fYrefly Youth Action Committee

Camp fYrefly Calgary is accepting applications for 2017’s Calgary Youth Action Committee. As a member of the Camp fYrefly Youth Action committee, you will brainstorm ideas, activities and workshops, connect with other youth and be an important part of planning Camp fYrefly 2017. We are looking for a diverse group of 10 young people (ages 14-24). Applications close on March 3rd, and meetings will start in mid-March.

We value multiple perspectives and want to hear lots of different voices at this table. Everyone is welcome to apply – we are especially hoping to hear from youth of colour, trans-feminine youth, youth with disabilities, asexual and two-spirit youth. Rural youth are also encouraged to apply, as skyping into meetings can be arranged. Please share! Applications due March 3rd.

Thanks to the great relationship between iSMSS, Camp fYrefly and Calgary Sexual Health Centre, we are proud to offer an exciting and new LGBTQ+ awareness and anti-homophobia program to Calgary and area schools called fYrefly-in-Schools.

fYrefly-in-Schools educates students on LGBTQ+ identities and the impact of homophobic and transphobic behaviour, giving them tools to challenge discrimination through activities, participation and stories from a youth panel.

Experienced educators facilitate activity-based workshops with help from a youth peer education team. The fYrefly-in-Schools program is grounded in the fact that all students in Alberta’s schools must be provided with a safe and caring environment free from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and gender expression.
